All About Date Rape Drugs

Talking about sexual violence is a scary topic, and even more so, when you add date rape drugs to the equation. “What drugs?” and “How can they add to the situation?” You may be asking. There are three known date rape drugs and they can be used very easily if you are not careful.

The three drugs used most commonly with sexual assaults are Rohypnol, Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate and Ketamine Hydrochloride. They are used because they can be slipped to the intended victim without them knowing, and they render the victim unconscious, but physically pliable.

The victim rarely ever remembers anything afterwards, making the crime too often unpunishable and forgotten. And unfortunately, they can be obtained relatively easy via the internet or from unscrupulous people who handle illegal substances.

Here is a description of each drug.

Rohypnol – This is a prescription depression medication, however it is not allowed in North America.

Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB) – This drug acts as an anesthesia, however it is only manufactured in illegal drug labs. It is banned from the United States, Canada and most parts of Europe.

Ketamine Hydrochloride – This drug is used legally in veterinary practices as an anesthesia, but is much stronger when used illegally in humans.

All of the date rape drugs are odorless, colorless and tasteless. This is what makes them dangerous because they can be slipped in to a drink or even food without you ever knowing, until it is too late. If you have been given a drug, you will have the appearance of being drunk or really tired. At a party, people see someone appearing really drunk and may not take any notice, thinking they had been heavily drinking. A “friend” who most likely fed the victim the date rape drug, looks to be helping them to get home. In reality, they are setting up the crime and taking the victim to a secluded location to perpetrate the assault.

Other effects on the body while the date rape drugs are in the system include sluggishness, inhibition, clouded memory and the inability to focus. Once the drugs wear out of the body, a person may feel like they have a hangover, even when they hadn’t been drinking alcohol. Some wear off as quickly as three hours. They also leave the body quickly, often times within 24 hours, which prevents them from being picked up in a blood test by a doctor.

If you suspect you have been given dating drugs and assaulted, you need to get to an Emergency Room or a doctor quickly so they can perform the necessary tests and try to find an answer.

Here are three things you should make sure you do whenever you are in a social environment.

1. Prevent yourself from being an unsuspecting victim by always drinking your own drinks.

2. Never accept a drink, whether it is alcoholic or not, from a stranger. You never know what they could have put in to that drink.

3. When you do drink, buy it directly from the bartender so you can see it being made.

Date rape drugs and their effects are scary. However, if you are careful with what you eat and drink, and stick with the buddy system, you can prevent yourself from being an easy victim.

Women who are very drunk or high sometimes end up being sexually taken advantage of. If you have a female friend or loved one who fits the above description, it is recommended that you learn how to help an alcoholic or drug addict so this kind of tragedy can be averted.
