JDate Reviewed
We would like to introduce Jdate.com to anyone who has ever had a Grandmother randomly blurt out that you had to meet a nice Jewish boy or girl.
This site is an online dating service for Jewish singles that was established in 1997 and they have more than half-a-million active members spanning the globe with roughly half of that number located in the United States. Women slightly outnumber the men and most members are between the ages of 18-49, residing in major metropolitan cities.
The site has also been known to attract its fair share of non-Jewish members that are seeking Jewish mates and this has drawn some criticism from Jewish members who feel this intrusion defeats the purpose of the site. They have achieved some recent notoriety for winning a 2006 Webby award for social networking. The site has been namedropped on episodes of American television like House, Entourage, South Park and American Dad.
It takes just a few minutes to complete Jdate’s membership and you will then have access to the huge database of Jewish singles. The site has reported there are approximately 15000 new subscribers every month.
The two tiers of memberships offered are free and premium. A Non-paid member can reply to instant messages but is unable to initiate contact with someone, beyond a pre-written message known as a ‘flirt’, until they become a premium member. The paid membership will open up your site experience by allowing you to send and receive e-mails in addition to instant messaging and chat privileges. This presents a greater opportunity for networking and meeting someone of interest to you. Premium memberships are available in 1 month, 3 month and 6 month intervals.
The site was revamped towards the end of 2005 with many neat features like a mutual interest alert, keeping a list of prospects and webcam support. More items of importance and interest to Jews were included in the profile setup. For instance, the profile now asks about the form of Judaism practiced, if the user practices at all, frequency in attending synagogues and whether dietary law is adhered to.
The site does a very nice job in building a community vibe and there are in-person activities such as cruises, ski trips and even organized trips. Members of the site are able to submit and write columns of interest to singles and the Jewish community in general for the online magazine (Jmag). An archive is maintained of Jdate.com members who have married through meeting on the site.
Statistics within the past decade seem to always indicate that a large number of Jewish men and women in the United States marry outside of their faith. It is important for a site like Jdate.com to exist for their community.
