Preventing Date Rape

Preventing date rape from happening to you, or a person you love is certainly possible. There are safeguards to put in place and warning signs to look for before a date rape happens. Following certain steps and educating your daughters, sisters, friends and co-workers is all it takes to remain safe, smart and in control of a dating scenario to make sure that it does not happen.

There are several ways of preventing date rape from happening to you.

1. Until you are comfortable with your date, schedule the dates for public locations with ample space and other people present. A restaurant, a movie theater, a park during the day or a comedy club are all great suggestions for a date.

2. Arrange for your own transportation to and from the date, until you trust the person you are dating.

With public transportation readily available in most major cities, there are ample alternatives even if you donít own a car. Call a taxi, ride a bus, take the subway or even ride the train to your meeting location. This way, you can control when and how you get home and it will go a long way towards preventing date rape.

3. Let a friend or family member know your plans, including where you are going and when you plan on returning. If you donít have a roommate, call a friend, send an email or a text message to someone if you canít reach them in person. Send it to several people if it makes you feel more comfortable. The buddy system is a great safety net.

4. Go to parties with a group of friends.

Donít head anywhere alone if it is unfamiliar territory. If you must attend a frat party, take along a group of girls. And stay together! Donít get separated or leave someone behind.

5. Donít accept drinks from strangers.

You donít know if it is laced with a date rape drug such as rohypnol. Only drink drinks you buy and have watched the bartender prepare.

6. Remain in control of your senses Ė donít overindulge in alcohol or drugs so that someone can take advantage of you.

This isnít to say you canít drink ever, but use caution. If you are with your girlfriends, have someone be the lookout for everybody. Kind of like the designated driver, this is the designated watchdog. This personís job is to keep tabs on everyone while you party together. When and if everybody lost control of their senses, problems could occur very easily and go unreported, thinking that your alcohol clouded mind was at fault, when it isnít.

7. Carry a cell phone.

This seems like a no-brainer since cell phones are so common nowadays. But sometimes people forget or donít bother to take them since they donít know if they will have a signal anyway. Carry your cell phone at all times so you can at the very least alert a friend if you become uncomfortable. A situation doesnít have to be out of control before you call in for backup.

While following all of the above tips isnít a guarantee you wonít be a victim, it will greatly help in preventing date rape.

Educate all of the women you know to prevent your friend or relative from being involved in a date rape. Safety is key.
