Confidence is directly related to relaxation and one of the leading confidence crushers is the feeling of fear or uncomfort. No one likes this feeling and most people will run in the other direction at the mere mention of a situation outside of their comfort zone.

But sometimes we cannot run and have to face the music and this can cause a lot of distress to most people. There is, however, a few ways to help you through these times.

By learning relaxation skills you will be able to get yourself through things like tough social settings, job interviews, tests or even a trip to the dentist’s office.

Here are three quick and easy relaxation techniques you can use anywhere at any time you start feeling nervous.

1. Breathing

This is one of the most overlooked relaxation techniques ever. Most people simply do not realize how important controlling your breathing truly is. When you begin to focus on your breathing, slowing it and concentrating on the air coming in and out, you can help relax your body.

Not only are you slowing your breathing, but you are also causing your racing mind to focus on what is important at the time. By taking deep breaths and holding them you are forcing your mind to slow, your heart rate to slow and the muscles in your body to relax.

2. Thought Control

Force control the thoughts that are entering and leaving your mind.

In some cases when you are feeling threatened or insecure your mind is rehearsing how self conscious that you are. If you change this it can help you provide a more confident appearance. If you look calm on the outside and can control your breathing and speech others will see you as confident and self assured.

Remember people believe what you tell them and what they see from your actions! Find something to focus on and begin rehearsing in your mind something positive. It may be the wonderful shoes that you have, great hairdo or anything positive that you can find. Rehearse in your mind that you are in a positive spirit and that will rejuvenate your entire body and mind!

3. Laugh Control

If you have the opportunity to crack a joke or laugh at someone else’s joke, by all means do so!

There is a great release of pressure and pent up energy when we laugh. It can also break the silence and make others at ease with the situation and yourself. Do not be afraid to laugh at the appropriate time, it makes you appear approachable and it will ease your mind. Do not overdo it with the laughing, but a good laugh never hurt anyone!

Remember to get some exercise before you enter into a stressful situation. If you know that you will likely be insecure at the party tonight, hit the gym or take a walk earlier in the day! It will release stress in the body and help you clear your mind!

These relaxation techniques are also useful if you are feeling stressed out from work or after an arguement with your partner and by relaxing your body they can really help lift your mood.
