Signs Your Relationship is Getting Worse
There are a few tell-tale signs that can tell you if your relationship is worsening. Generally, if you notice one or more of these issues happening in your relationship, it is a result of a deeper, underlying issue that will eventually need to be addressed one way or another. These issues highlight why communication is so important in a relationship. With communication, the following issues should really be hardly noticeable. It is only because of a lack of communication that the following problems can start to arise.
Having Sex Less Often
This is a tricky one because all couples, even those in healthy relationships, will notice a decline in sexual activity over time. When you first start dating, everything is new and exciting and you want to have sex as often as possible. After the newness wears off, which happens to every relationship, sex will naturally occur less often. But if you've gone from a consistent 5-7 times a week down to once a week or less, there is clearly a problem. Once sex becomes a rarity, the relationship is having some serious issues.
Apathy Towards Seeing Each Other
If you can go hours, or even days without seeing your partner and then not even care to see them once you reunite, there are some issues that need to be addressed. There should be some level of excitement about reuniting with your partner whom you haven't seen in a couple of days. If there is no such excitement, there is a major problem.
Impatient About Things Important to the Other Individual
In every relationship, there are those couple of things that one person really cares a lot about, and the other person doesn't really care but is still supportive of their partner. For instance, the female may really care about her volunteer time as a Big Sister. While the male doesn't really care much about this, he still takes an active interest in it and listens attentively because he knows it's important to his companion. However, when you notice that this courtesy of caring is no longer being extended, the relationship is on the decline. Anyone who can't spend 15-30 minutes a day listening to their partner share things that are important to them is probably in a relationship that won't last.
Increased Fighting
Most fights in a relationship are not really about the thing you're fighting about. Fights can happen for any number of stupid reasons including someone not doing the dishes or someone checking their email at the wrong time. Usually, a fight is the straw that broke the camel's back. Fights don't happen because dishes got left in the sink, fights happen because there were 30 other things that built up to making dishes being left in the sink out to be a huge ordeal. The more fights a relationship is having, the more problems it's having. It all goes back to communication. Little failures to communicate along the way lead to big blowups over nothing down the road.
Honesty is truly the best policy in any relationship. By communicating your needs and feelings in an honest and straightforward manner, you are keeping your relationship well maintained. What stops most of us from communicating is fear. Fear of what communication might lead to (gasp, a breakup?!) But know this: even in a worse case scenario where communicating leads to a break-up, it will only be because a break-up is what is best for both of you in the long-term. Don't cling to something that is causing unhappiness just because you are afraid to be honest. Honesty isn't always easy, but i what's best.
